Sometimes, despite every effort to preserve a tooth, removal is the most responsible option. Severe decay that has compromised too much of the tooth structure, fractures that extend below the gum line, and advanced gum disease that has caused irreversible bone loss are all situations that can make extraction the best way to protect your overall oral health. For many patients, the idea of having a tooth removed feels intimidating, but today’s dental techniques have made simple extractions a routine and surprisingly comfortable experience.

At Satilla Family Smiles, tooth removal is never the first choice that we automatically suggest. Our dental services in Brunswick are centered around a patient-first philosophy that prioritizes conservative care, meaning we thoroughly evaluate every alternative before recommending an extraction. Proudly serving families throughout the Golden Isles of Georgia for more than a decade, our team takes the time to fully guide each patient through their options, answer their questions, and make sure they feel confident throughout the process.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Tooth extractions are recommended when restoring the natural tooth is no longer a realistic or safe option. The most common situations that lead to this recommendation include severe decay that has destroyed the structural integrity of the tooth, a fracture that extends deep beneath the gum line, an infection that has spread beyond what root canal therapy alone can resolve, or significant bone loss caused by advanced periodontal disease. In each case, removing the tooth protects the surrounding teeth and tissues from further damage.

It is also important to note that we perform simple tooth extractions at our practice. Surgical extractions, including the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, require a referral to an oral surgery specialist. Our team will clearly explain your situation and, if a referral is necessary, help connect you with the appropriate care. If cost is a consideration in your treatment planning, our Elite Dental Savings Plan offers great discounts on dental services, including restorative care that may follow an extraction.

What to Expect During a Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction at our practice is a measured, step-by-step process designed to keep you comfortable and well-informed from the very start. Your care begins with a detailed evaluation that shapes the entire treatment plan before any procedure takes place.

The Consultation and Examination

During your consultation, Dr. Bailey Sisler will review digital X-rays, examine the affected tooth and surrounding tissue, and assess whether extraction is truly necessary. She will explain her findings in plain language and tell you about what to expect during and after the procedure. You will have ample time to ask questions and raise any concerns about discomfort, anxiety, or recovery so that your care plan can be tailored accordingly.

The Extraction Procedure

On the day of your extraction, a local anesthetic will be administered to ensure the area is completely numb before any work begins. Most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain. Dr. Sisler will gently loosen and remove the tooth, clean the site, and place gauze to support clot formation. The procedure itself typically takes less than an hour, and many patients are able to return to light activity the same day. For patients who are managing urgent dental discomfort, we offer same-day appointments to address acute concerns before they worsen.

Aftercare and Recovery

Proper aftercare is critical to a smooth recovery. The first 24 to 48 hours after your extraction are the most important window for clot formation and initial healing. The CDC reports that more than 1 in 7 adults aged 65 or older have lost all of their teeth, a sobering reminder of why responding to tooth loss proactively, and caring for what remains, matters at every stage of life. Following your post-operative instructions closely helps prevent complications such as dry socket and infection.

Your aftercare plan will be personalized to your situation, but general recommendations typically include the following:

  • Biting gently on gauze for the first few hours to help control bleeding
  • Avoiding rinsing, forceful spitting, or using a straw during the first 24 hours
  • Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals to minimize swelling
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding chewing near the extraction site
  • Taking any prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications exactly as directed

Most patients experience the greatest discomfort within the first 48 hours, with the area continuing to heal over the following week. Contact our office promptly if you notice increasing pain after that initial window, persistent bleeding, or any signs of infection. Staying engaged with your ongoing oral health through regular care is one of the most effective ways to protect your smile long after the extraction site has healed.

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss carefully around the crown each day, and keep your regular dental exams and cleanings on schedule. If you grind your teeth at night, let Dr. Sisler know — a custom night guard can protect your investment and extend the life of your crown significantly.
